ADULT DROP-IN CLASSES
Afro-Cuban Modern dance (or "Tecnica Cubana") is a Cuban dance that blends North American modern technique and European ballet with sacred Afro-Cuban traditions. The class starts with a warm-up focused on contraction and release techniques and undulation exercises, followed by across-the-floor and choreographed combinations. Components of traditional Afro-Cuban folkloric dances are also taught. The class is suitable for dancers of all levels.

Our classes center around learning and improving students' understanding of the following core flamenco dance principles:
Proper posture and body positioning (colocación), percussive footwork (zapateo); movement of the arms/port de bras (braceo) and the circular movement of the hands (floreo); turns (vueltas); movement patterns that mark the beat (marcaje); rhythmic hand-clapping (palmas sordas/palmas altas); understanding of select flamenco rhythms (palos); locomotor movements across the floor will combine skills of the upper and lower body. All classes feature live accompaniment by professional flamenco guitarist Pat D'Aprile.

Modern class structured in the style and teachings of Lester Horton. Horton technique incorporates 17 “fortification studies” (among other elements) that each focus on a different idea, such as descent/ascent and laterals, or body parts such as the Achilles tendons or abdominals. Class progresses across the floor with movement phrases, turns and single-foot arch springs (jumps from one foot).
Sound Space specializes in tap. That's why we built the best floor in town. Whether you're an absolute beginner or a working professional, we have the class for you.
Absolute beginner with Pam: a mix of music concepts and basic technique, including straight time, swing time, how to execute time steps and basic fundamentals like flap, slap, shuffle, hop, leap and step, breaks, understanding phrases, and more.
Beginner/intermediate with Pam: using more complex technique and phrasing, we work on fundamentals, dynamics, clarity and phrasing, typically in the jazz tap tradition.
Intermediate/advanced with Pam: complex weight shifting, increased tempos, specificity in footwork and a focus on clarity.
Street hoofin' with Robert: This class focuses on a style of dynamic, close-to-the-ground, a cappella tap that is unique to Philadelphia and was made most popular by the late LaVaughn Robinson.
Beginner Tap Clinic with Pam: Ask me anything! We work on technical skills and music concepts in a relaxed environment.
We are excited to offer our first session of clogging, a type of American percussive folk dance, which developed from aspects of English, Scottish, German, and Cherokee step dances, as well as African rhythms and movement. Tap shoes or hard soled shoes required.
