BEGINNER FLAMENCO TECHNIQUE: This class will center around learning and improving students' understanding of the following core flamenco dance principles:
Proper posture and body positioning (colocación).
Percussive footwork (zapateo); including the parts of the feet used to make sound; the ball of the foot (planta), the heel (tacón), the whole foot (golpe), and the point of the toe (punta)
Movement of the arms/port de bras (braceo) and the circular movement of the hands (floreo)
Basic turns (vueltas)
Simple movement patterns that mark the beat (marcaje)
Two types of rhythmic hand-clapping (palmas sordas/palmas altas)
Basic understanding of select flamenco rhythms (palos)
Locomotor movements across the floor will combine skills of the upper and lower body.
INTERMEDIATE FLAMENCO TECHNIQUE: In this class, experienced dancers will gain a more thorough understanding of flamenco dance technique by learning:
More complex footwork (zapateo) to improve speed, agility, efficiency, and strength. The incorporation of select tap dance steps will expand students' vocabulary and ability to express sounds and rhythms.
Larger variety of arm and hand work/port de bras (braceo)
More intricate movement patterns that mark the beat (marcaje)
Advanced turns (vueltas)
Longer combinations of movement allow dancers to expand their ability to memorize movement sequences and execute choreography.
OPEN-LEVEL FLAMENCO CHOREOGRAPHY (Accompanied by LIVE FLAMENCO GUITAR): The skills gained in technique classes will be put into practice by learning a choreography in the rhythm (palo) of Alegrías de Cádiz. This class will be accompanied by flamenco guitarist Pat D’Aprile. Students will:
Gain a greater understanding of the 12-beat palo of Alegrías de Cádiz
Learn to keep the rhythm (compás) with hand-clapping (palmas) to live music
Execute steps in the format of a traditional baile por Alegrías (salida, llamada, letra, silencio, castellana, escobilla, subira, bulerías de Cádiz)
Gain a greater understanding of the interaction between flamenco cante, toque, and baile
Practice skills and vocabulary learned in technique classes
Increase athletic/aerobic stamina by dancing longer choreographic phrases
Train the brain to memorize dance steps in a choreography.
All classes have live accompaniment.
