Join us for an evening of new and old work by Philadelphia based choreographer, Shana El, and the Ujima Dance Theatre. $10 or pay what you can.

Saturday, September 15th: 7:30pm


The work presented in this showcase is a preview to Ujima Dance Theatre's Fall concert show "Legacy/Awakening". It will be performed at the Community Education Center's meeting house Theater in October of 2018.

Titles of works to be presented:
* "In The Spirit of Ogun" - an ensemble work set on six dancers, and a highly technical piece blending the influences of Modern dance, Contemporary, African and Dunham technique.
* "Southern Breeze" - a duet set to the music of Nina Simone and a spoken word text from Bernard Collins which both explore social injustices enacted on people of African descent, and how they are still fighting for justice and rights today.
* "Women's Voices" - an ensemble work set on 4 to 5 dancers, which speaks to the strength and perseverance of Women internationally including how they are able to overcome life's challenges.
* "Stories" - a new two-part ensemble work of six dancers with spoken word text from Bernard Collins and the music of Zap Mama. "Stories" will also be a dedication to women and their fight to push for social change and equal rights internationally.
* "Contemplation" - a solo work which explores the meaning of life and sense of being. Performed to the soulful music of N'Dambi.

Ujima Dance Theatre was formed in 2016 by artistic director Shana El. The Company has performed and presented work at the Venice Island Performing Arts Center, the ETC. Performance Series, the CEC, the CHI Movement Arts Center, and the Painted Bride Arts Center in Philadelphia. The Artistic Director Shana El has worked as an Independent Choreographer and artist from 1993 to 2010 and has worked with Performance Dance Theatre, the Independent Choreographers Exchange, the Field Philadelphia by Renee Banson, and self-produced her own projects.

The performers for this evening's work will consist of seven professional and experienced dancers Kalia Mullen , Kristin Gambone, Meli'sa Grier, Brianna Ramalho, Tonia Fields, Sevon Wright, and Crystal Gatling.
